What To Expect When You're Expating.
Since I was 8, my dream was to be a teacher abroad. There are lots of educators in my family and as long as I can remember, everywhere we travelled we stayed with a family member and I wanted to be one of those cool stops around the world.
My focus in University was Literacy, Language and French, and I worked for the Government of Canada teaching English to Immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in tandem with completing my Bachelor of Education.
While completing my BEd, I was actively applying and looking for opportunities to work abroad and was fortunate to find an opportunity in the United Arab Emirates.
I moved abroad during COVID (August 2020), and quickly had to adjust to not only a new lifestyle, culture, and climate, but also the intensity of the pandemic protocols in a new place. This made the start of my travel journey isolating, and once it was safe, my number one priority was to build connections and explore the region and surrounding countries in an accessible and budget friendly way.
My mission is to highlight unique and affordable destinations, UAE travel and lifestyle, and help you travel on a budget.
Fast forward to now, I am preparing to go into my sixth year teaching abroad and each year has been better than the last! By building @remiahtravels, it has broadened my travel network even further, and given me the chance to share my tips, tricks, and budget friendly destinations with other Black women, solo travelers, and like minded expats hoping to explore on a budget or while maintaining a 9 – 5 job!
Teaching and connecting with so many unique, international students has been a gift and an opportunity to expand my knowledge and theirs about cultures, religions, beliefs, and perspectives.
Now I strive to showcase the beauty and complexity of UAE and entice others to visit, work here, or travel abroad. UAE is such a magical country and has rich culture, foods, art and history to explore. Travelling to unique destinations around the UAE has opened up many doors that I may have never considered (or been able to afford) before and has pushed me to challenge myself and redefine how I see myself. @remiahtravels is a space where together we can explore unique destinations and adventure, together!
